OG Straws for Hockey: New Initiative Unites Eco-Friendly Straws and Local Hockey Support Across BC

Vancouver, BC – October 2025 — Naturally OG Straws, a Shaffer Farms brand, has announced the launch of OG Straws for Hockey, a province-wide initiative that blends environmental responsibility with grassroots sports support.

OG Straws are carbon-negative, eco-friendly straws made from Canadian rye grass. For every case of 500 straws sold to bars and restaurants, Naturally OG Straws will donate $5 directly to hockey families in British Columbia, helping cover the cost of jerseys and travel for less well-off parents in the upcoming 2026 season.

“Hockey, cocktails, and straws have always been connected,” said Gerald Shaffer of Naturally OG Straws, a Shaffer Farms Brand. “Back in the 1850s, the rye fields that grew in summer became skating rinks in winter, and the same rye grass was turned into drinking straws for the Tom Collins cocktails of the day. Today, we’re bringing those traditions back together — rye fields, straws, and hockey — with an initiative that helps the environment and supports our players.”

Bars and restaurants that join the initiative will receive OG Straws at competitive wholesale prices, along with promotional stickers and flyers featuring the OG Straws for Hockey logo. This allows establishments to proudly show customers that every drink they serve helps reduce plastic waste and keeps kids in the game.

Naturally OG Straws is now calling on BC bars, pubs, and restaurants to participate in this grassroots fundraising effort. Together, small steps — and small straws — can make a big difference.
